Residencies
New Pacific Studio Residency, Mt Bruce, Wairarapa
The New Pacific Studio at Mount Bruce is open year-round to accept applications for resident fellowships from artists, writers and environmentalists in New Zealand and elsewhere. Fellows have many opportunities to interact with the local arts community: regular open days, exhibitions, radio talks, schools sessions, workshops etc. Anyone engaged in any kind of creative work is welcome to apply for a residency. Applications accepted year-round, though none offered in December. Residencies can be two weeks to 3 months and there are five individual spaces, although with room sharing up to nine artists can stay.
New Pacific Studio, Mount Bruce, is located on a five acre property on State Highway 2, just 1 km north of the National Wildlife Centre, five minutes south of Eketahuna and 20 minutes north of Masterton. This is a beautiful rural area of sheep and dairy farming and close to native bush in the northern Wairarapa, one hour by car from Palmerston North and 90 minutes by train from Wellington. Excellent hiking is available close by in the Tararua Ranges.
Artists are responsible for their own travel expenses and pay a weekly residency fee. This includes linen, heating, use of washing machine and dryer and access to high speed internet and printer. Heat pump and LPG heating throughout. Fellows provide their own catering in communal kitchen and dining room. Station wagon available for shared shopping and local use. Residents sharing car contribute $50 pw. towards gas and running costs. Bring your own computer or other working materials. Allow yourself a space of uninterrupted time for your own creative work without the pressures of your regular everyday life. Enjoy the company of artists in residence and a rural atmosphere.
New at New Pacific Studio
New Pacific Studio is now offering (December-April only) short working retreats of 3 or 5 days, in addition to its regular 2 wk-3 month artist residency programme. Please see the recently updated website http://www.newpacificstudio.org for details and images. This is the only international residential artist community in New Zealand, and more than 70 artists and writers have enjoyed residencies here in its six years of life. Cuban-American writer Ana Maria Rodriguez is in residence in November 2007. Email: Kay Flavell at newpacificstudio@xtra.co.nz
Residencies are selected through a formal process, whereas retreats are open to anyone who wants simply to come and focus on their own work for a short period.
