Cyril Childs
Cyril Childs was born in Invercargill in 1941, and has written haiku and related forms for over 15 years, and is a past-president of the New Zealand Poetry Society. He edited both of the NZ haiku anthologies published by the NZPS (1993, 1998), and co-edited Listening to the Rain (Small White Teapot Group, Christchurch, 2002). His own book, Beyond the Paper Lanterns - a journey with cancer, was published in 2000. He has judged three NZPS haiku competitions, and was co-judge of the Haiku Society of America's Henderson Award in 2000. His career as a scientist has given way to a busy life of leisure in Port Chalmers, a gem of a town overlooking Otago Harbour. Contact Cyril.
her hands ...
folding and refolding
a table napkin
the path's crack -
measuring my time
in this house
stormy August-
the first camellia
faces the wall
no name
for its colour -
tea-table rose
after the holiday ...
sand in my pocket
crisp blue morning
spring in the air
and the postman's feet
firefly viewing -
her feet ...
feeling for the path
puff of breeze -
the hollowed-out fly struggles
against the web
her breast
where the lump came out -
crescent moon
Shigenobu River -
moonlight
out of each stone
