Poets to the People, Raumati South
Sunday 26 February, 4-6pm
Lembas Cafe, Poplar Ave.
Our first guest poet for the year is Nicola Easthope, who has been a keen supporter and foundation member of the Lembas poetry group. It has been wonderful to see Nicola's work reach a widening audience over recent years.
A Raumati resident for many years, Nicola's poems touch on themes of travel, teaching, nature, love and family - and gently underline our need to think globally, yet act locally, with regard to these issues.
Nicola's first recognition came in 2005, when she won 2nd prize in the Bravado International Poetry Competition, and more recently she was a finalist in the 2011 WWF 'Ocean:Views' competition. Here's an extract from her entry:
She is an ocean staircase strider.
She rides clear above shells and crabs.
Gannets lift her thighs high
with fine lines of surf.
She shapes their heads into bottles.
Draws their bills into nibs.
Here comes the perfect page.
In 2011 Nicola's channelled her fascination with gannets as a metaphor into her outstanding anthology Leaving my arms free to fly around you http://www.steeleroberts.co.nz/books/isbn/978-1-877577-57-4
Hopefully you'll be coming along with a poem to open the New Year (which like the rest of us is rapidly aging), and welcome and support Nicola, our local poet. Remember name on the board before we start. 1 poem only. $5 entry.
