2010 International Poetry Competition

 School Group Entry Instructions:

Open Junior and Haiku Junior (including Senryu)

Entries MUST BE RECEIVED BY: 31 May 2010

We gratefully acknowledge the generous support of Community Post for supporting our connection with schools.

Schools may complete the Official Entry Form in the name of the school, and include:

1.     A separate list showing each student's name, age, and the title (poem) or first line (haiku) of each entry. Please keep poems and haiku separate, and provide a list for each section. Please ensure each poem is clearly attributed to the correct student. Where two haiku have the same first line, please include the second line, to distinguish them.

2.     Two copies of each poem/haiku on separate sheets of paper.

3.     A cheque for the total amount of entry fees is preferred.

Please note that in the event of a poem being awarded a prize or selection for our anthology, we will request the student's personal contact details for further communication.

Fees: $2 per poem for the Open Junior Section;

For the Junior Haiku Section, $1 for 2 haiku, or $1 if only 1 haiku is submitted.

No change or overpayment of less than $5 will be refunded.

Overseas entries are welcome.

We gratefully acknowledge the generous support of Asia: NZ for the Haiku Junior Section. Visit  our sponsor site at www.asianz.org.nz

Entry information

The entry form is available for download at the bottom of this page. We suggest you read the information between here and there before you download it.

  • Names must not appear anywhere on poems/haiku, only on the master entry form. Poems with any form of identification will be disqualified, with no refund of fees.
  • Enclose two copies of each poem/haiku, each on a separate sheet of paper.
  • Poems may be up to 40 lines. Modern English haiku do not follow a 5/7/5 format, which is usually too wordy, but should capture the ‘haiku moment'.
  • Poems/haiku should be typed or neatly printed, one poem or haiku per page. The page must be no smaller than A5 (half a sheet of photocopy paper).
  • Handwritten entries must be clearly legible.

  • Each entry must be the original work of the student it is attributed to.
  • Entries must not have been previously published or accepted for publication in either print or electronic form.
  • Entries will not be returned but will be destroyed, so please ensure the student has kept a copy.
  • Poems must not be submitted elsewhere in NZ until 31August 2010, by which time entrants will be notified if their poems have won or been selected for publication.
  • Entry constitutes acceptance of all terms, and failure to comply with the rules will result in disqualification, with no refund of fees.

Results will be published in our bimonthly magazine, posted on our website, emailed by request, or enclose a stamped, self-addressed envelope (SSAE) with your group entry.

Publication: All poems entered must be made available for publication in an anthology to be published by the NZPS in November 2010.  Entrants will be notified by 31 August 2010 if their poems have won or been accepted for publication.  NZPS has the right of first publication of all poems accepted for the anthology.

Promotion: Winners consent to the use of their poems for promotional purposes by the NZPS including but not limited to our website, brochure, and magazine.

Copyright in individual poems will remain with the poet, but copyright in any book produced by The New Zealand Poetry Society will remain with the NZPS.
